I recently saw an article about the increasing of certain things like cameras that automatically record speeding cars and then give them tickets. Personally, I am a huge fan of very powerful personal rights of citizens and as limited a government as is practically possible. In other words, I think big brother represents a disastrous way to end the freedoms and liberties that we know and enjoy currently in our society.
Allow me to note that all this doesn’t necessarily apply only to the U.S., but I happen to live here so it is the country that I am most familiar with. Without any further ado, here’s the list:
4. They will inevitably catch some of their own people doing ‘wrong’ things. They already have, really. At this point, it’s just a question of that individual’s resources; can their reputation take the hit, or maybe can they bury the story so nobody ever finds out? Also, how willing are the other constituents of big brother willing to throw their own under the bus for the sake of their greater cause? Based on previous events, I would venture to guess that they are very willing to do so.
3. A sort of positive feedback loop may come into existence. Partly as a result of the previous point and as a result of the general trends of society and culture, I think that the entire concept of big brother has a relatively high likelihood of feeding into a repetitive cycle of creating more rules to catch people, catching more people, patting themselves on the back, then creating more rules to catch more people and so on and so forth. The group of people who actually have power in the system is relatively small and quite closed off. Sure, it’s a ‘democracy’ where ‘the people have the power’ but if you believe that to honestly reflect reality (in the U.S., at least), then go back to your high school and sign up for AP U.S. History class again.
2. Along the lines of this positive feedback loop idea, big brother will make the problem of bloated government infinitely worse. The program will just keep growing and growing, for it’s flaw is that it doesn’t really ever have any reason not to expand. Take this cycle and continue it ad nauseum, and we end up with a beast of a big brother system that is probably as big as, if not bigger than, the rest of government.
1. I have no plans in the immediate or long-term future to change my masturbation habits. If big brother eventually reaches the point of invading that aspect of my life, I view it as a possible problem for them but of no concern to me. Unless they start trying to make money off of it, which I wouldn’t put past them…
